Holy Thursday

“I have earnestly desired to eat this Passover with you before I suffer” (Lk 22:15). These words of Jesus, with which the account of the Last Supper opens, are the opening through which we are given the surprising opportunity to perceive the depth of the love of the persons of the Holy Trinity for us. Peter and John had been sent to make the necessary preparations for eating the Passover. But, on closer inspection, all of creation, all of history—which would ultimately reveal itself as the history of salvation—is a great preparation for this meal. Peter and the others stand at this table, unaware of their presence yet essential: every gift, to be truly gifted, must have someone willing to receive it. In this case, the disproportion between the immensity of the gift and the smallness of the recipient is infinite and cannot fail to surprise us. Nevertheless, by the Lord’s mercy, the gift is entrusted to the Apostles so that it may be brought to every man and woman. No one had earned their place at this meal. Everyone was invited. Or rather, everyone was drawn by Jesus' burning desire to eat this Passover with them: he knows that he is the Lamb of this Passover meal, he knows that he is the Passover.
